The maty\u00f3 embroidery, with a history of approximately 200 years, is one of the oldest types of embroidery in Hungary and was included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2012. https:\/\/csodasmagyarorszag.hu\/cikkek\/eld-at-a-hagyomanyt https:\/\/csodasmagyarorszag.hu\/cikkek\/eld-at-a-hagyomanyt<\/a><\/div>\n

It is not only a recognized folk art form in Hungary but also worldwide, reflecting the richness of local traditions and culture.<\/p>\n

The UNESCO<\/a>list, interest in maty\u00f3 embroidery has increased, leading to numerous international events, exhibitions, and workshops. Programs showcasing traditional embroidery techniques and motifs attract visitors who can learn about the rich heritage of maty\u00f3 culture. The Homeland of Maty\u00f3 Patterns<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n

The homeland of the maty\u00f3 pattern comprises three settlements in the Northern Great Plain: Mez\u0151k\u00f6vesd, Tard, and Szentistv\u00e1n. The first maty\u00f3 patterns appeared in the 19th century, primarily adorning bedspreads, with embroidery being added to clothing later on. The \u201c\u00edr\u00f3sasszonyok\u201d (female embroiderers) played a crucial role in creating textiles, as they pre-drew the embroidery patterns. One of the most famous among them was Kisjank\u00f3 Bori, who was awarded the title of Master of Hungarian Folk Art for her work. The embroidered motifs typically depict flowers, the most characteristic of which is the peony rose, also known as the maty\u00f3 rose.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The Meaning of Colors in Maty\u00f3 Embroidery<\/h4>\n
In maty\u00f3 culture, each color has its own significance! Black generally represents the color of the earth, symbolizing the harvest from which life springs. Red expresses joy, while yellow symbolizes summer and the creative power of the Sun. Blue is the color of sadness and transience, while green signifies mourning, which appeared in the world of maty\u00f3 embroidery after World War I. In remembrance of those who fell in the war, the edges of aprons were embroidered with green rivers.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
