TRADITION

Among the many special types of embroidery in Hungarian folk art, the matyó pattern has now become known all over the world. But it hasn't always been, and it won't necessarily stay that way: knowledge passed down through generations can easily disappear if it's not cared for properly. We work every day to - while preserving its original values - create a new place for the tradition of matyó embroidery in the world of fashion. An important element of our work is the zero waste spirit: we strive to ensure that our exclusive clothes stay true to their values from the first step of production to the last. The embroideries praise the handiwork of the women of Matyóföld in an ethical and sustainable way, instead of disposable products, the customer receives timeless garments. Encouraging responsible shopping is also an important part of the ethos of our company.

THE MATYO EMBROIDERY

Matyó embroidery has a history of roughly 200 years, making it one of the oldest types of embroidery in Hungary, which was added to the UNESCO list of intellectual and cultural heritage in 2012.
The Matyó sample is home to three settlements in the Northern Great Plain: Mezőkövesd, Tard and Szentistván. The first matyó samples date back to the 19th century. They appeared in the 19th century, at that time they were mainly used to decorate bedspreads, and embroidery only appeared on clothes later.
Women writers played an important role in the production of textiles, drawing the embroidery pattern in advance. The most famous of them was Bori Kisjankó, who won the Master of Hungarian Folk Art award for his work.
The embroidered motifs typically depict flowers, the most characteristic of which is the peony, which also became known as the matyó rose. The material of the traditional hand-embroidered matyó dress is black cloth or white linen, and the color palette of the embroidered motifs is very rich: in addition to the dominant red, yellow, blue, green, purple, pink, black and various shades of these appear.

WHY SLOW FASHION? - matyodesign and zero waste

Every product that we release has its own story. During the production of hand-embroidered unique pieces, we employ more than 35 Tardi women, who put not only their knowledge spanning generations, but also their hearts into the creation of each piece of handicraft.
We also strive for sustainability when choosing materials, as the most important thing for us is to make long-lasting garments that represent quality instead of products that wear out quickly. It is important for us to encourage our customers to be aware, as our past and future are shared.
